LIVE! UFC 279 Undercard Results, ‘Prelims’ Play-By-Play!

The latest Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) pay-per-view (PPV) offering hits T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, TONIGHT (Sat., Sept. 10, 2022), bringing with it a re-worked, last-minute pay-per-view (PPV) main event clash between Octagon legends, Nate Diaz and Tony Ferguson. UFC 279, which takes place inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, was supposed to be the coming out party for Khamzat Chimaev and a goodbye celebration for Diaz; however, “Borz” bungled his weight so bad that the promotion was forced to perform life-saving surgery literally hours before the ceremonial weigh-ins to save it from the scrap heap.

And UFC 279’s PPV main card still looks pretty good!

BLOCKBUSTER WELTERWEIGHT SHOWDOWN! Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sat., Sept. 10, 2022, with a must-watch updated Welterweight thriller that will see perennial fan favorite, Nate ‘The Stockton Badboy’ Diaz now battle former top-ranked Lightweight contender, Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson, who will return to the 170-pound weight class for this last minute, upgraded assignment. Meanwhile, In UFC 279’s pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event, we now get the undefeated No. 3-ranked contender, Khamzat Chimaev, opposite Kevin ‘Trailblazer’ Holland in a five-round catchweight bout. These bouts will be preceded by and additional exciting catchweight contest between, “Leech,” Li Jingliang and Daniel ‘D-Rod’ Rodriguez, in a must see barnburner.

Round one: They slug it out right off the bat. Body kick from Collier, then a clubbing hook that drops Barnett. Continuing to trade heat. Sneaky elbows by Collier as they slug it out. Somehow neither goes down and they reset a minute in. Barnett puts him on the fence, eats an elbow on the break. His left eye’s not in great shape. Switch kick falls short. Collier puts him back on the fence and knees the body. They separate two minutes in. Big three-piece by Barnett kicks off another wild exchange. Low kick. Brief clinch. 2-1 lands for Collier, then another combo behind it. Teep met by a Barnett low kick. Two minutes to go.

Hard low kick from Collier, who avoids a flurry in return. Barnett tries a spinning back kick, lands a jab, gets tripped to the mat. Collier moves right to mount, then the back, pounding as he does. Barnett trying to move and survive the GNP, weathers an RNC as well with a minute to go. Barnett makes it back to his feet and tries to slug it out. Counter left from Collier. What a round from the big boys. 10-9 Collier.

Round two: Barnett’s left eye is about 90% shut, but somehow he’s still good to go. Hard punches in the early going. He’s swinging for it. Nice Superman jab and a lengthy flurry. Collier weathers it, unable to tie up. Body knee and jab by Barnett a minute in. Collier digs a knee to the body and elbow in return. He tries an outside trip again, but this time Barnett denies it and starts bombing away. Full mount. Referee imploring Collier to move. The punishment is too much and Barnett has pulled off a wild comeback.

Final result: Barnett def. Collier by TKO (punches)


145 lbs.: Danyelle Wolf vs. Norma Dumont

Round one: Jab lands for Wolf. Low kicks from Dumont. Wolf falls short with jabs. One minute in. Side kick by Dumont as Wolf’s punches continue to come up short. Quick exchange. Two minutes in. Dumont low kick. Not exactly riveting stuff so far. Solid right cross by Dumont catches Wolf leaning in. There’s a 1-2 from Wolf and a jab behind it. Two minutes to go.

Dumont flicking out lead-leg kicks. 1-1-2 from Wolf, counters from Dumont. Dumont jab catches Wolf coming in. Both whiff on jabs. One minute to go. Nice chopping right by Dumont behind the jab. Wolf falling short. There’s a jab. Dumont cracks her with a cross in the waning seconds. 10-9 Dumont.

Round two: Wolf still struggling with the distance. Dumont low kick a minute in, then a counter right soon after. Wolf trying to send out kicks. Good combo by Wolf as Dumont ties up. Dumont responds with an outside trip into guard two minutes in. Dumont lets her up, clubs her with a couple shots, then ties up against the fence. Wolf unable to separate. Two minutes to go.

Wolf manages to break the grip and make distance. Combinations falling short. Jab exchange. Wolf tries to open up and Dumont hurts her bad with a 1-2. Finish isn’t there, but she ties up again with a minute to go. They separate. Another big 1-2 floors Wolf again in the last seconds. She’s wearing a hell of a shiner when she goes back to her corner. 10-8 Dumont on damage.

Round three: Wolf sending out combinations, gets slammed to the mat and mounted for her trouble. Dumont looks for the arm triangle, loses it and gets caught in half guard. Hard hammerfists as Wolf regains guard. Wolf tries to attack an arm and eats more punches. Trying to strike off her back. Wolf scoots to the fence, eats more shots two minutes in. Dumont in side control. Full mount. Wolf regains half guard. Two minutes to go.

Short shots from Dumont. Wolf just trying to hold her close. One minute to go. Dumont postures, blasts her with elbows. Full mount in the waning seconds. Wolf just holds on under the elbow onslaught. 10-8 Dumont.

Final result: Dumont def. Wolf by unanimous decision


135 lbs.: Alatengheili vs. Chad Anheliger

Round one: They meet in the center, staying outside punching range. Both falling short with jabs. One minute in. Low kick lands for Alatengheili, then a right cross as they trade. Jab from Anheliger answered in kind. Heavier swings two minutes in. Alatengheili starting to push forward. Anheliger threatens a Superman punch, eats a cross in an exchange. Hard 2-3 stings Anheliger, who looks to answer back. More pressure by Alatengheili. Counter right connects with two minutes to go.

Good jab by Anheliger. He tries to rush in and gets wobbled by another clean cross. Alatengheili staying patient, lands a low kick. Hard low-high 1-2. Anheliger pops him with a counter left, eats a leg kick. One minute to go. Alatengheili continuing to patiently advance, lands another low kick. Body kick attempt. Quick exchange. Lead hook by Anheliger to get off the fence. 10-9 Alatengheili.

Round two: Low kick from Alatengheili spins Anheliger around. Anheliger really trying to draw out something he can counter. One minute in. Anheliger tries a head kick. Left hook falls short, head kick blocked. Another low kick from Alatengheili. Good low-high two-piece by Anheliger, then a counter left as Alatengheili tries to respond. Alatengheili looks for the body two minutes in. Heavy hook connects for him, then a 2-3-2 that stings Anheliger. Anheliger tries to play it off. Cross counter from Alatengheili, continuing to advance. He lands a body shot, denies a clinch, absorbs a flurry with two minutes to go.

Cross from Alatengheili, who eats a low kick a bit later. Anheliger falls short with a 1-2 and eats a hard left hook. One minute to go. Anheliger low kick met by a body shot. He comes back with a body kick and tries to follow up with a hook kick. Jab catches Alatengheili coming in. Wheel kick attempt form Anheliger. He tries a Saenchai cartwheel kick before the bell. 10-9 Alatengheili.

Round three: Alatengheili opens with a leg kick, then hits an easy ankle pick and drops a hard right hand. Standing over Anheliger, who’s looking for leg and upkicks. Low kick from Alatengheili a minute in. Ref waves Anheliger up. Good leg kick. Jab exchange. Another low kick. Two minutes in. Good 1-2. Alatengheili flurry falls short. Both potshotting in center cage. Anheliger whiffs on an overhand. Quick exchange. Anheliger the busier this round. Counter right by Alatengheili with two minutes to go.

Low-high kicks from Anheliger. Flicking out the jab. Inside low kick from Alatengheili. Left hand exchange, Anheliger tries to follow up with a head kick and eats a leg kick. One minute to go. Neither man connecting clean. Alatengheili runs the pipe for a single-leg, avoiding a guillotine in the process, and blasts away with punches until the bell. 10-9 Alatengheili.

Final result: Alatengheili def. Anheliger by unanimous decision


115 lbs.: Elise Reed vs. Melissa Martinez

Round one: Martinez advancing early, flicking out kicks. Reed with her own low kick that’s met by a cross. Check hook by Martinez and a front kick downstairs. Left body shot as she switches stance. She leads with a front kick to the body, only to get floored by a nasty counter right. She manages to get her wits back and separate a minute in. Tentative stretch. Low kick from Reed, front kick from Martinez. Glancing head kick by Martinez, who backs away from a double right. It’s Reed on the front foot now. Long-range double-leg from Martinez, can’t get her all the way down, puts her on the fence. Knees from Martinez, punches from Reed in the clinch. Two minutes to go.

Jockeying for position. Reed manages to reverse and put her on the fence. Mutual over-unders. They separate with a minute to go. Reed body kick, falls short with a right hand and wheel kick. Martinez tries a hook kick and 1-2, avoids a rush. Reed ties her up in the last 10 seconds and they trade knees. 10-9 Reed.

Round two: Martinez opens with an inside low kick. Reed continuing to pressure, absorbs a body kick. Martinez tries a head kick. Reed tries to goad her, eats a low kick. One minute in. Reed starts chasing and they trade power shots on the fence. Martinez with a front kick downstairs and a low kick after avoiding a Brazilian kick. Reed runs into a counter left and a side kick on the exit two minutes in. Martinez low kick. Both fall short with big shots. Martinez oblique kick and Reed puts her on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Knees from Reed. She swings on the break. Martinez looks for the body, lands a straight left upstairs and absorbs a body kick in return. One minute to go. She runs in to try a trip and they fight for position on the fence. 10-9 Martinez.

Round three: Double right lands for Reed. Martinez fires teeps in return. 1-2. Low kick exchange. Both land their crosses in succession. Hard low kick by Martinez seems to get Reed’s attention a minute in. They trade inside. Another inside low kick by Martinez. Head kick attempt. Straight left. Reed chasing her, falls victim to a double-leg into guard. Martinez standing over her two minutes in. Knee to the body on the way up and again they fight for position on the fence. Good knee by Reed, who muscles her to the mat with two minutes to go.

Solid elbows land for Reed as Martinez makes her way back up. Reed counters a takedown and looks for the back on the way up. Another takedown with a minute to go, landing punches on the way up. Reed keeps her stuck against the fence until the bell, landing knees. 10-9 Reed.

Final result: Reed def. Martinez by unanimous decision


170 lbs.: Darian Weeks vs. Yohan Lainesse

Round one: Lainesse circling to start. Jab splits the guard. Jab, low kick. 1-1-2 attempt in center cage. Hard 1-2 a minute in. Weeks looking for leg kicks, eats another 1-2. Mostly kicks from him so far. Jab and low kick by Lainesse, looks for another cross two minutes in. Knee stomp catches Lainesse throwing and knocks him off-balance. Weeks blitzes with punches and grabs a front headlock as Lainesse changes levels. Lainesse pops his head free after a short time. Two minutes to go.

More circling by Lainesse. Weeks trying and failing to catch him coming in with left hooks. Long left hook by Lainesse glances off. Weeks shoots, punches on the break with a minute to go. Lainesse goes southpaw, lands a leg kick. Weeks catches a body kick. Marching forward. Oblique kick. 10-9 Lainesse.

Round two: Weeks tries a quick body kick. Low kick by Lainesse, still circling. Oblique kick from Weeks. 1-1-2 attempt falls short, check hook does not a minute in. Another wide left hook. Lots of feints, no commitments on either side. Two minutes in. Low kick by Lainesse, good counter hook soon after. Weeks looks for a front kick, then fires a double-leg. Big left and slam, but Lainesse pops right out and separates with a minute to go.

Both whiff on big right hands. Jab from Lainesse. He’s just not committing to anything this round. Weeks fires a counter left, tries a reactive shot, puts him on the fence. One minute to go. Long hook from Lainesse when they separate. He shoots, denied, avoids a 1-2 rush. Weeks looks for a late shot and bit swings. 10-9 Weeks.

Round three: Back to the usual of Lainesse circling and Weeks advancing. Ugly combo attempt by Weeks, avoids a 1-2 in return. Lainesse tries a body kick. One minute in. Lainesse doing a lot of movement and very little throwing. Weeks shoots, denied. Knees to the body as Lainesse puts him on the fence. They separate. Weeks ducks a jab for another shot, gets sprawled on. Nice Browne elbow by Lainesse as he defends two minutes in. Weeks trying for a single-leg as Lainesse tries to wrench a kimura. Weeks looks for a spinning elbow on the break. Low kick by Lainesse with two minutes to go.

Weeks ducks another jab. Lainesse does a full circuit of the cage without throwing a thing. Jab by Lainesse. Lainesse body kick, Weeks cross and low kick. One minute to go. Weeks low kick. Lainesse seemingly afraid to throw anything. Both whiff against the fence. Weeks tries a front kick. 1-2 by Lainesse, who grabs a front headlock and tries a flying knee. Gonna be some interesting scoring. 10-9 Lainesse.
