Cub Swanson reveals he suffered ACL, meniscus tear at Quintet Ultra

Cub Swanson decided to squeeze in one more combat sports appearance before the end of 2019 and it proved costly.

Following a unanimous decision win over Kron Gracie at UFC Tampa in October—Swanson’s first victory in over two years—the featherweight veteran announced that due to a hand injury and minor lacerations on his eyes it was unlikely that he would be fighting again before the new year. However, he found time to participate in the Quintet Ultra grappling event on Dec. 12 in Las Vegas as a representative of Team WEC.

Facing off with Jake Shields (representing Team Strikeforce), Swanson found himself defending against a leg lock at around the five-minute mark of their contest. Swanson got the worst of it and Shields immediately released him as it was evident that Swanson was injured.

On the weekend, Swanson confirmed via social media that he had injured his knee.

“I had a great time at the event last night. Unfortunately, I suffered a complete ACL & Meniscus tear from this reap,” Swanson wrote.

Shields also expressed his regret over the accident via Instagram:

“Had a tough match with cub Swanson last night despite the weight differences. Unfortunately going for a sweep leg lock i felt some bad knee pops ending the match. Hopefully cub is healthy and can fight again soon”

The former Strikeforce champion shared a clip of the incident, which can be viewed below:

Swanson, 36, is yet to provide a timetable for his return following this latest setback.
