Jinh Yu Frey and Ashley Cummins will have their rematch.
Officials announced via a press release Thursday that Frey will defend her atomweight title against Cummins on Feb. 7 at Invicta FC 39, the promotion’s first event of 2020. This bout was supposed to take place at Invicta FC 37 in October, but Frey was forced to withdraw due to injury.
This will be Frey’s second title defense after winning a close unanimous decision against Minna Grusander in July of 2018 to claim the championship and then beating Grusander by split decision in their rematch five months later. Frey (8-4) fought once in 2019, losing to Ayaka Hamasaki at RIZIN 16 in a bout for that promotion’s 49-kg (approx. 108 pounds) title.
Cummins (7-4) has won two straight against Jessica Delboni and Stephanie Alba, but did not have any fights scheduled in 2019 outside of her aborted rematch with Frey. Her last loss came at Invicta FC 24 in July 2017, when Frey defeated Cummins by unanimous decision.
In the Invicta FC 39 co-main event, Pearl Gonzalez (10-4) meets Miranda Maverick (6-2) in a flyweight bout. Since debuting with Invicta in March 2018, Gonzalez has gone 4-1 in the promotion, only losing a technical decision to Vanessa Porto in a fight for a vacant 125-pound title. She rebounded with a unanimous decision nod over Brogan Walker-Sanchez in the replacement main event of Invicta FC 37.
Maverick, 22, recently won Invicta’s second Phoenix Series tournament this past September, defeating DeAnna Bennett, Victoria Leonardo, and Shanna Young in the same evening.
Invicta FC 39 takes place at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan. The card will air on the UFC Fight Pass streaming service.
