The UFC recently announced they’ll be making their long awaited return to San Diego on May 16, 2020. The last UFC card in San Diego took place on July 15, 2015 at the Valley View Casino Center. That card was known as UFC Fight Night 71: Mir vs Duffee. There were several prominent UFC fighters who fought on the undercard that night. Fighters such as Jessica Andrade, Holly Holm, and Tony Ferguson just to name a few. All of those fighters went on to win UFC belts after fighting on that card.

The card returning to San Diego on May 16 will be known as UFC on ESPN+ 33 and or UFC Fight Night San Diego. It will be headlined by a lightweight title eliminator bout between Dustin Poirier #2 (25-6) and Dan Hooker #5 (20-8). This will be Poirier’s 1st fight since losing his bid for the UFC Lightweight title against Khabib Nurmagomedov back on September 7, 2019. Dan Hooker is coming off a razor thin decision victory over Paul Felder just 2 weeks ago on February 22, 2020.

As for the rest of the card there have been a few fights announced, most between unranked fighters. However UFC President Dana White teased something special Friday morning on the Ben & Woods Show on 97.3 The Fan. While being interviewed by Steven Woods, Dana White went on to say the following:

“We’re coming to San Diego May 16th. Be there May 16th and I’m gonna tell you this San Diego… I’m bringing you the greatest free card ever. When I say free it’s gonna be on ESPN the network. We’ve never built a card this good on linear tv ever. It’s coming to San Diego May 16th and I can’t wait to get there.”

As a native San Diegan and huge fan of the UFC I hope Dana White comes through on his claims.
