St-Pierre was in the midst of a dominant run at the top of the 170-pound division when he met Hardy, a British star who went 4-0 in the UFC to earn his title shot. While “The Outlaw” was given the proverbial puncher’s chance, he found himself on the receiving end of a vintage St-Pierre performance. Hardy claimed a moral victory by gutting out a couple of scary submission attempts, but inevitably it was St-Pierre who added to his growing legacy.
The loss sent Hardy into a slump, though he bounced back with consecutive wins over Amir Sadollah and Chris Lytle before putting his career on indefinite hold in 2012. Meanwhile, St-Pierre went on to successfully defend the welterweight championship five more times before taking his own break from the sport in 2013.
