At UFC 253 Jan Blachowicz beat Dominick Reyes to claim the light heavyweight title vacated by Jon Jones, who is moving to heavyweight. At the post-fight press conference, Blachowicz called out Jones.

“Jon Jones why not? Nobody knows what he’s doing right now, so we’ll see,” said the new champ. But yeah, why not? He promised me this fight in Albuquerque after I knocked out Corey Anderson.”

That seemed unlikely, as the reason he held the belt was because Jones left. However, at the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White was amenable to the idea.

“I like that he wants to fight Jon,” said White. “You know he could have called out whoever the next contender is, and the fact that these guys respect Jones enough, and the fact that they want to be the guy who beats the guy, I love it. … Obviously, if Jon Jones wanted that fight, we wouldn’t deny Jon Jones the opportunity.”

Jones later fired off a series of tweets indicating he was entertaining the idea.

And then Blachowicz, who had asked for the Jones fight, was not enthusiastic.

If Jones isn’t next. then the winner of Thiago Santos vs. Glover Teixeira UFC on ESPN+ 40 on November 7 in TBA will be, as long as history doesn’t repeat itself. Santos was scheduled to face Teixeira at UFC on ESPN+ 35 on September 12, 2020, but Teixeira tested positive for COVID-19 a week prior to the fight, so it was rescheduled UFC on ESPN 16 to October 3. Then it was Santos who tested positive for COVID-19, and on September 15 the fight was rescheduled again. So the winner on 11/7 likely gets the shot at the champ. Or Jones does. Or, this being 2020, who knows?
