There hasn’t been much coming out of the Conor McGregor camp in the hours following his unfortunate ankle roll from hell loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 (watch the highlights here).
His ‘post-fight interview’ with Joe Rogan was a mess of angry yelling and gutter trash talk directed at Poirier’s wife, and since then we imagine he’s been seething over the defeat while getting prepared for Sunday morning surgery on what is reported to be a fractured lower tibia.
But in the wee hours of Sunday, around 4AM local Las Vegas time, “The Notorious” did pop up on Instagram with a short and somewhat mysterious post. The picture showed a visibly pissed off McGregor getting stretchered out of the T-Mobile Arena. The caption? “You need people like me.”
For those wondering, that’s part of a quote from Scarface. It starts to make more sense with the full quote, which featured Al Pacino as Tony Montana lashing out at gawking Miami diners after a meltdown at a restaurant with his wife.
“What you lookin’ at? You all a bunch of f—kin’ assholes. You know why? You don’t have the guts to be what you wanna be. You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your f—kin’ fingers and say ‘That’s the bad guy.’ So… what that make you? Good? You’re not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don’t have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie.”
“So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There’s a bad guy comin’ through! Better get outta his way!”
McGregor has been playing the bad guy all through UFC 264 fight week, and it hasn’t exactly been a winning look. Any time you say you’re gonna send your opponent out on a stretcher and you end up on one instead, you’re gonna take a lot of heat. And the trash talk didn’t even work on Dustin Poirier, who laughed and/or cringed his way through it with the rest of us.
Of course, we all went and bought the card, making this McGregor fight just the latest to flirt with 2 million in PPV sales. So maybe it wasn’t such a foolish song and dance Conor was doing through this whole affair, and it certainly sets up a fourth fight well enough that it’s guaranteed to sell at similar numbers.
If you’re one of the lucky investors in the UFC sucking up all that sweet profit, you may not need ‘bad guy’ McGregor, but he’s sure nice to have around.
