The first knockout at UFC 264 came from Dricus Du Plessis, and it was a thunderous fight finisher.
In the early goings of the preliminary bout between Du Plessis and Trevin Giles, “The Problem” seemed every bit of that on the feet for the South African in his second fight in the UFC.
Dricus Du Plessis sleeps Trevin Giles at UFC 264
Giles, 28, looked smooth and confident as he attacked his Du Plessis with punches and kicks. Often the KSW veteran would bite on Giles’ feints and seemed uncomfortable in the first round when the two traded strikes. Late in the round, the 27-year-old was able to get the fight to the ground and give Giles some problems of his own. However, despite being on the bottom of a full mount position at one point, the Houston native was able to avoid a fight finishing scenario and get the bout back to standing.
In the second round, it seemed like more of the same, as Giles left his hands low and did not fear what his opponent had to offer. It was a poor strategic decision. After a multi-punch combo against the cage, Giles stepped back to admire his work and left his hands down again, in this instance, “Stillknocks” made him pay for it. Unleashing a straight right hand that floored the American.
The follow-up bunches were just the cheries on top, because Giles was done before he hit the ground. Eventually, the referee jumped in to stop the fight at 3:19 of the second round.
The victory is Du Plessis’ second straight in the Octagon, with both by knockout. On the flip side, the loss ends a three fight win streak for Giles and is the first knockout defeat of his career.
