Following Diaz’s stunning second-round submission of McGregor at UFC 196, the promotion was hot to sign an immediate rematch with both fighters having seen their profiles elevated by the record-breaking first encounter. McGregor pushed hard for it and the two stars would cross paths again five months later.
This time, McGregor showed much-improved stamina and durability, as he knocked Diaz down early in the fight and then weathered a storm of offense from Diaz in the third. The always-dangerous Diaz had McGregor cornered and looked like he might finish the fight, but “The Notorious” escaped the round and went on to win a majority decision despite Diaz’s best efforts.
McGregor’s next fight is just around the corner as he fights Dustin Poirier in a trilogy bout next Saturday in the main event of UFC 264 in Las Vegas.
