Both Jai Herbert and Renato “Moicano” Carneiro had clear advantages over the other in their UFC Vegas 30 main card opening bout. When the fight was on the feet, Herbert showcased slick and fast striking that gave the Brazilian trouble. On the mat, Moicano displayed the sort of grappling that originally made him a name in the UFC. Fortunately for Carneiro, he kept the bout on the mat.

Throughout the almost two rounds of action, “Moicano” smartly returned to his strength and put on a Brazilian jiu-jitsu clinic. In the first round, “The Black Country Banger” did his best to make Carneiro work for his positions and tried to get back to his feet. However, his opponent was all over him at every turn. Getting him back to the mat whenever he tried to a standing position and cutting through his guard to get full mount several times.
Late in the first round, Herbert was able to get the fight back to the feet and seemed to build some momentum heading into the second round. However, in the second, the 18-fight veteran made sure to get things back to where he could dominate. Once things returned to the mat, dominate is what he did has he passed through his opponent’s defenses and started to do damage with ground-and-pound. Eventually, one of the strikes hurt Herbert and would set up his demise.
With 27 seconds left, “Moicano” snapped up his opponent’s neck, scored his eighth submission victory and his first W as a lightweight in the UFC. After losing three of his last four, the victory was a pivotal moment in getting the former featherweight stars’ career back on track.
For Herbert, 33, he has lost two straight for the first time in his career, and is winless in his first two appearances in the Octagon.
